Todd McShay talks about the upcoming draft class

"After releasing his Grade A mock draft on Tuesday Corey Ballentine Jersey Boys , ESPN’s Todd McShay spent some time holding court with media on a draft-related conference call. McShay dished on a number of topics of importance to the New York Giants. Let’s look at some of them.Dwayne Haskins vs. Drew Lock McShay had a hard time articulating why the impression is that Haskins is sliding while Lock is rising as the draft approaches. Why? Because he’s a Haskins guy, which explains why he gave the Ohio State quarterback to the Giants with the sixth overall pick in his mock.“I really like him [Haskins]. I have him rated ahead of Drew Lock and I would argue for him based on the tape and the consistency of the tape,” McShay said.“I would make the argument for Haskins but I think they’re both going to be really good pros. I really do.”So, back to why there are increased murmurs that some teams, quite possibly including the Giants, prefer Lock to Haskins.“If you’re going to make an argument for Lock over Haskins, hypothetically, the argument is similar size, similar arm, better athlete, 46 starts compared to 14, confidence, kills it on the board when you sit down and talk football with him,” McShay said.“Haskins very smart White Cody Latimer Jerseys , best pure pocket passer in this class, but again if you’re a scout that is pushing your GM to go the route of Lock you’re banging on the table for the experience that he has and some of the other things. 鈥?#8220;If you’re looking for reasons for failure, and that’s what scouts do, they have to do it, you’re just concerned about is he (Haskins) always going to be in great shape and take care of himself and those sorts of things.”On Quinnen WilliamsThere is a belief among some folks in the scouting community are hoping and praying that the Alabama defensive lineman somehow falls to them at No. 6. That probably shouldn’t happen, but the more mock drafts you look at and the more scenarios you pore over the more you realize it could happen.McShay was answering a question about the New York Jets at No. 3 when he spoke about Williams. What he said, though, should be of interest to the Giants.“I just think Quinnen’s special. I really do. 鈥?I just think if you get an opportunity to draft a difference-maker, the way I think Quinnen can be in the league you gotta take advantage,” McShay said.“I honestly when I was done evaluating the tape I thought he was the best defensive player in all of college football this year.”Defensive lineman Ed Oliver of Houston talks with New York Giants scout Marcus Cooper during workouts at the NFL Combine.Photo by Joe Robbins/Getty ImagesOn Ed OliverDoes the freakishly athletic Houston defensive lineman fit with the Giants? Here is McShay’s take on one of the draft’s more interesting players.“He could have been used differently and more effectively [in college],” McShay said. “If he’s developed properly he’s got a chance to be one of the two or three best players in this draft class. Anywhere past pick three or four I don’t think it’s a reach at all for Ed Oliver.” Giants hold their first voluntary OTA"WhiteFanposts Fanshots Sections New York Giants NewsGiants Training Camp 2016Giants vs. Eagles 2015, Week 17New York Giants NewsGiants OTA 1: Quarterback depth chart, weather worries, more notes from first practiceNew Youth Evan Engram Jerseys ,157commentsGiants hold their first voluntary OTAEDTShareTweetShareShareGiants OTA 1: Quarterback depth chart, weather worries, more notes from first practiceCody Latimer makes a catch during Monday’s OTA.Noah K. Murray-USA TODAY SportsEAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — New York Giants coach Pat Shurmur moved quickly after Monday’s first OTA to circumvent any idea that there will be a preseason quarterback controversy between Eli Manning and first-round pick Daniel Jones.“At the quarterback position, we have a starter in Eli and we have guys behind him, specifically Daniel Jones, who need to do everything they can to be ready to play Week 1,” said Shurmur, who was peppered with quarterback questions at the beginning of his media availability. “That’s where we’re at.”Shurmur also shot down the idea that there might be tension between the 16-year veteran Manning and the rookie drafted to one day succeed him.“No,” he said emphatically. Shurmur said Jones is “gonna get reps just like every other player. He’ll be in there competing with the twos, sometimes with the threes.”Shurmur did, however, say that Jones will get the “majority” of the backup snaps. Here are some other practice takeaways.Sloppy offenseMonday was the beginning of Phase 3 of the offseason program, and the first time offensive and defensive players were allowed to work against each other. Neither Manning nor Jones was especially sharp Evan Engram Jerseys Stitched , perhaps not unexpected considering that it’s mid-May and this was the first live practice.Manning threw a pick that was batted by cornerback Sam Beal and plucked out of the air by Jabrill Peppers. Jones threw a pick 6 that was in the hands of rookie wide receiver Darius Slayton, who bobbled it, popped it into the air and handed cornerback Tony Lippett a gift touchdown. As an overall takeaway, I thought Jones was indecisive on a few of his throws. I’m not getting alarmed about that — not on the first day of team practice of his rookie season. It was probably to be expected that he would be a bit tentative.More takeawaysSeveral players missed the workout, with the severe storms that hit much of the country over the past 24 hours being blamed for that. Among players missing the workout were Dexter Lawrence, Antoine Bethea and Dalvin Tomlinson were among the missing who were apparently impacted. Eric Dungey arrived late.Shurmur said cornerback Sam Beal “looked good out there today.” Beal, who spent last year on IR after being selected in the 2018 NFL Supplemental Draft, worked at left corner.Rookie Corey Ballentine is “making progress” after suffering a gunshot wound in the rear end during an incident that claimed the life of his friend Dwane Simmons. Shurmur said it is “still gonna be a little bit of time” before he can practice.Mike Remmers is “a pro, a real pro,” according to Shurmur. Remmers worked on the side with trainers on Monday as he continues to recuperate from back surgery. “He’ll be ready to go once the seasons starts, for sure,” Shurmur said. Chad Wheeler worked at right tackle with the first team and Brian Mihalik took first-team reps at left tackle, where Nate Solder is out due to ankle surgery Shurmur referred to as a “little cleanup.”
